Teach me sensei

Ok dumb question time. When you empty the cup from your skimmer are you supposed to clean it out? If so how thoroughly? throat and all?

clean all including throat. cleaning the throat allows the skimmate to flow to the cup better.

I was thinking just rinse in sink wiping gunk out with fingers. That ok?

I heard you should avoid directly touching the parts of the skimmer that come in contact with the water being skimmed - something about the oils in your skin affecting it. I always wipe mine out with a paper towel instead of my fingers.

I use a toilet brush on mine, it smells worse than a toilet so why not clean it like one

Minimum hands/fingers on mine .... and like Tom ... use an aquarium sponge ... no problems.
